What BIMI does

With BIMI, mailboxes such as Gmail, Yahoo and Apple Mail show your logo next to your mails. It requires a strict DMARC policy.

How it works

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) is a TXT record at default._bimi.<your domain> that points to your logo. Supporting mailboxes show it next to your mails.

v=BIMI1; l=https://your-domain.example/logo.svg; a=https://your-domain.example/vmc.pem

l= points to the logo, a= to the certificate for it.

BIMI does not improve delivery directly. It makes your mails recognisable in the inbox and requires clean authentication, which pays off anyway.

What matters

  • DMARC with p=quarantine or p=reject for 100 % of mails. With p=none no mailbox shows the logo.
  • Logo as SVG in the Tiny PS profile: square, without scripts and external references, with baseProfile="tiny-ps". The file must be reachable over https.
  • A certificate for the logo (VMC or CMC) if it should appear at Gmail and Apple Mail. A VMC requires a registered trademark, a CMC does not. Yahoo also shows logos without a certificate.
  • Cost. The certificates cost money every year; without them the effect is limited to few mailboxes.

How to set it up

  1. First bring SPF, DKIM and DMARC to quarantine or reject.
  2. Have the logo made as SVG Tiny PS, for example by your agency, and put it on your website.
  3. If needed, apply for a VMC or CMC at a certification authority.
  4. Enter the BIMI record in the DNS settings of your domain.
