What Google's AI Overviews are

AI Overviews are the AI answers Google shows above the results for many searches, with links to their sources. Being cited there puts you above every other result.

How it works

For many searches Google generates a summary with its Gemini language model and shows it at the very top, before the classic results. Next to it or below it are links to the pages the answer draws on. Whether an AI Overview appears is Google's decision per search; for many searches, especially simple or local ones, there is none.

There is no sign-up and no special markup for being a source. Google names only two requirements: the page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in search with a snippet. From those pages Google picks the ones that answer the question best, not necessarily the highest-ranking ones.

Through a provider of search results, bytereport queries the keywords of your project and looks at whether an AI Overview appears, which domains it cites and where your site ranks organically.

What matters

  • Keywords with an AI Overview. The report shows how many of your keywords Google answers with an AI answer at all. This is information, not a rating.
  • Being cited. If at least half of the AI Overviews cite your domain, bytereport rates this as good, from 20 % as fair. The finding also names whom Google cites instead.
  • Ranking organically, but not cited. If you rank in the organic top 10 for a keyword but are not named in the AI Overview, a short, direct answer on the page is usually missing.
  • Stay indexable. noindex takes the page out of search and so out of AI Overviews; see indexability.
  • Allow snippets. nosnippet or max-snippet:0 exclude a page; see snippet rules.
  • A run is a sample. AI Overviews change over time and from place to place. Compare several runs.

How to get cited

  1. Answer the question behind the keyword early. Two or three clear sentences at the top of the page that answer the question directly. Lists and tables help.
  2. Look at the cited pages. What do the pages Google cites instead have? Often it is more precise details, a date or a clear structure.
  3. Check the technical side. Indexing and snippet rules are set in the CMS or SEO plugin, the X-Robots-Tag header in the web server configuration. Google-Extended in robots.txt has no effect on AI Overviews; see AI crawlers.

How meaningful the results are depends on the keywords: choose the searches through which your customers should find you.
